It’s one thing to look at a house, but it’s another to imagine your life unfolding there. In Fredericksburg, that life is measured by the seasons and the traditions that bring us all together. Having helped so many of you find your way home here, I’ve realized that the “soul” of our neighborhoods isn’t just in the floorplans—it’s in these local moments.
Here is my personal guide to the events that make our community feel like home, all year round.
Spring: Bloom and Heritage
When the dogwoods finally show off, you’ll find us shaking off the winter chill and heading outdoors to see what our local makers and farmers have been up to.
-
The Farmers Markets: This is where my Saturday mornings always begin. Whether you’re heading to Hurkamp Park downtown for that classic city vibe or the Spotsylvania Commuter Lot for a massive selection of local produce, there’s nothing like grabbing a coffee and supporting our neighbors.
-
Earth Day Festival: April at Old Mill Park is pure magic. It’s the perfect spot for the kids to learn about the river while we grab lunch from a favorite local food truck.
-
Virginia Renaissance Faire: Starting in May at Lake Anna Winery, this is a total escape. Whether you’re there for the jousting or just the turkey legs, it’s a five-weekend blast from the past.
Summer: Golden Hours and Long Days
Summer here is all about that slow, hometown energy. It’s about sticky fingers from ice cream and the sound of live music floating through the humid air.
-
Picnic in the Park: My favorite Tuesday tradition from the time my son could walk. Seeing families spread out blankets at Memorial Park for music and lunch is what community is all about.
-
Heritage Festival & July 4th: There’s nothing like the “Fabulous Fourth” downtown. The fireworks over the Rappahannock are the quintessential Fredericksburg experience and can be viewed from multiple locations about town.
-
Marine Corps Historic Half: Held in May but kicking off that summer energy, this is such a proud moment for our town. Even if you aren’t running “Hospital Hill,” being there to cheer on the runners as they wind through our historic streets is an experience that stays with you.
Fall: Crisp Air and Harvest Gold
As the leaves change, the focus shifts to our downtown corridors and the rich farming history that surrounds us.
-
Fredericksburg Agricultural Fair: As one of the oldest fairs in the state, it’s pure nostalgia. The livestock exhibits and the classic rides make you feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook.
-
Fredericksburg Fermentation Festival: This is such a cool, unique way to celebrate our local craft brewery and farm-to-table scene. It’s the ultimate “foodie” weekend.
-
Halloween at the Market: Watching the Farmers Market at Hurkamp Park transform into a sea of costumes and seasonal treats is the best way to kick off the spooky season.
Winter: Our Storybook Season
When the holidays hit, the historic architecture of Fredericksburg does the decorating for us. It’s truly the most beautiful time of year to be a local.
-
Winter Restaurant Week: This is my excuse to never cook in January. It’s the best time to visit your favorite downtown spots or try that new bistro you’ve been eyeing—all while supporting our incredible local chefs.
-
The Christmas Parade: This is the big one. Thousands of us line the streets to cheer on the marching bands and wait for Santa’s grand entrance.
-
Tree Lighting at Riverfront Park: There’s a certain warmth in sharing hot cocoa and carols with neighbors as the community tree finally flickers to life.
-
Mistletoe Market: If you want to “Shop Local,” this is your spot. I always find the most unique handmade gifts here for my clients and friends.
A Little Something Extra
If you really want to see the town at its most elegant, keep an eye out for A Downtown Affair. It’s a beautiful outdoor dining experience right on the streets of downtown. There is something so special about sharing a meal under the string lights with the historic skyline behind you—it truly highlights the “lifestyle value” of living in such a vibrant community.
There is a unique rhythm to life here, and I feel so lucky to help people find their place within it.
